WHY GO:
This tour on the north-west coast of Norway is so beautiful and varied. From the bike-friendly island Smøla, the magnifique Atlanterhavsveien and the majestic mountains surrounding Åndalsnes.
DESCRIPTION:
Day 1: Smøla - from Edøy to Veiholmen 55 km
Smøla is a bikefriendly island out in the sea at the Møre Coast north-west in Norway. It´s flat and open moorland, with several small, idyllic fishing villages. The ocean is never far away, as you ride on good, sometimes narrow asphalt roads with low traffic. It can be windy here, the large windmill parks is a prove of this.

To arrive at Veiholmen feels like coming to the end of the world. This small fishing village welcomes you with nature, food and accommodations. Just make sure to prebook your stay. Make a walk on the rocky shore and watch the sunset.

Day 2: From Smøla to Kristiansund 67 km
Going back over the Frostaheia the landscape is almost like the prairie. It´s long, straight and open. In the distance you see the impressive mountains on the mainland. The nice resting area after 16 km also have boards with interesting history of the hardship life on this island.
Back at the ferry terminal you jump on the free ferry for a short ride to Sandvika at the Tustna island. Be prepared for a lot more hilly experience now and with more traffic. The landscape is forest, mooreland and smaller farms and you cycle by the foot of the mountain. Another short ferry awaits you between Tømmervåg and Seivika.
Approaching Kristiansund is a variation of shared roads, dirt roads, cycling and walking paths. You even cycle through an outdoor museum with a lot of ship history. The nice city of Kristiansund is located on several islands connected by bridges and it´s also possible to jump on the local Sundbåten for transportation.
Alternative: From Smøla it´s also possible to take a faster boat directly to Kristiansund and skip cycling at Tustna.

Day 3: From Kristiansund to Bud 61 km
The Atlanterhavsveien is spectacular! This road gives you close contact with the Atlantic Ocean. You will want to stop and take pictures all the time. The most famous part is between Utheim and Vevang.
Starting from Kristiansund - make sure to pre-order taxi or jump on a bus to get through the tunnel. Also be prepared to share the road with cars for a good stretch today.

There´s a café at Lyngholmen - where you also have to check out the Svevestien. It´s several stores along the route, or just bring your own food and take a rest anywhere. Maybe you want to test the sea temperature at Farstad beach.The last part to Bud, an old fishing town, is on low-traffic smaller roads. It´s close contact with the sea and you cycle through countryside and farmland.

Alternative: Be aware that this route takes the shortest way over Averøya, while the signed route 1 will take you on the south side at Bruhagen. This will make the route 15 km longer, but with less traffic, so it may be an alternative if you want.

Day 4: From Bud to Molde 61 km
Today is an easy ride surrounded by mountains and fjords. Not the shortest route to Molde, but definitely the nicest. It´s a lot of separate bikelanes today and smaller roads with moderate traffic. Make sure to stop at the café at Elnesvågen to get some fresh pastry.

After 36 km it´s a really nice resting area by the water you don´t want to miss. You´re surrounded by mountains today, and you may also see some rock climbers if you look closely. The last stretch to Molde is great cycling with an impressive view to the Romsdal Alps.
Be aware that some signs are missing, especially on the last part so follow the map.

Day 5: From Molde to Åndalsnes 48 km
Expect a beautiful ride towards the majestic mountains surrounding Åndalsnes today. Make sure to book a taxi or jump on the bus to get through the undersea-tunnel which is forbidden for bikes, before starting the ride from Bolsøy. Be prepared for some traffic - especially in high season, but it´s also a lot of bikelanes and low-traffic parts.
A ferry and a couple of very short tunnels is also part of the day. At Åndalsnes the airlift take you up to the mountaintop of Nesaksla - if you want the greatest view. The train Raumabanen towards Dombås is also an experience by itself!

In high season July/August you must expect more traffic and pressure on accommodations.
